Benefits - Retirement

Upon entering service, Army National Guard Soldiers are automatically enrolled in the modernized retirement plan, known as the Blended Retirement System (BRS). The BRS blends the traditional legacy retirement pension, also known as a defined benefit, with government payments made into your individual Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) account, also known as a defined contribution. The TPS account is similar to many private sector 401Ks.

The Blended Retirement System benefit is in addition to any benefits from your civilian career. You will still receive those and any other retirement funds you have planned for.

Key Features:

  • Defined benefit - Monthly retired pay for life after 20 years of eligible service
  • Defined Contribution - Government automatic and matching contributions (up to 5%) to a member’s Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Automatic and Matching contributions are fully vested after two years of completed service.
  • Continuation Pay - A one-time, mid-career retention incentive (between years 8-12) in exchange for an additional service obligation of no less than three years.
  • Lump Sum - An option to receive a discounted portion of your monthly retirement pay as a lump sum upon retirement.
